Overpressure Explosion Protection Valve ÜV/ESV (1 bar) for Protective Shelter Ventilation Systems
The Overpressure Explosion Protection Valve ÜV/ESV is designed as an exhaust air valve for protective shelter ventilation systems while simultaneously functioning as an explosion protection valve. It provides controlled overpressure inside the shelter and reliably protects air inlet and outlet openings against blast pressure waves caused by explosions, sabotage, or industrial incidents.
The valves are suitable for civil protection shelters, military installations, and security-critical industrial facilities. After the pressure or suction phase has subsided, the valve automatically returns to normal ventilation mode.
Depending on the version, the valve is designed for VA 40, VA 75, or VA 150 ventilation systems.
Function and Operating Principle
Inside the valve housing, the valve disc is suspended on springs.
When a blast pressure wave occurs, the valve disc is immediately pressed against the sealing surface, closing the air passage and preventing dangerous pressure waves from entering the protected shelter.
At the same time, the integrated overpressure valve maintains the required positive pressure inside the shelter during filtration mode. Once the pressure or suction event has ended, the valve automatically reopens and resumes normal ventilation.
Since the valve disc is the only moving component, the system operates with minimal wear and offers exceptionally high reliability.
Advantages

Standards, Certification, and Type Approval
The Overpressure Explosion Protection Valves ÜV/ESV are manufactured in accordance with the requirements of the Swiss Federal Office for Civil Protection (BABS) and type-tested by LABOR SPIEZ of the Swiss Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (VBS).
Approvals (depending on model): ÜV/ESV 40: BZS T 03-006; ÜV/ESV 75/150: BZS T 05-001
BSSD supplies only tested and approved components for protective shelter systems.
Maintenance
To ensure reliable long-term performance, annual maintenance is recommended.
Maintenance includes:
- Cleaning the valve
- Inspecting the springs
- Checking free movement of the valve disc
- Lightly lubricating the flap bearing
- Verifying correct operation of the overpressure flap
Functional Check:
- With the ventilation system switched off, the overpressure flap must remain closed.
- During filtration mode in a sealed shelter, the overpressure flap must open.
Installation Notes
Only approved fastening systems may be used during installation. All anchors, bolts, and mounting components must comply with the relevant approval requirements. Installation must be carried out according to the manufacturer’s instructions and specified tightening torques.
Planning and Technical Support
Selecting the correct Overpressure Explosion Protection Valve depends on the ventilation system, required airflow, and overall shelter design.
BSSD supports planners, contractors, and operators in selecting the appropriate valve version for new installations, retrofit projects, and replacement applications.
